Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis, known as excessive sweating, causes the body to produce more sweat than necessary, often without a clear trigger. While this condition can be uncomfortable or embarrassing, it is quite common.

Sweat, an odorless fluid released by eccrine glands (sweat glands), helps regulate body temperature by evaporating from the skin’s surface. Hyperhidrosis occurs when these glands become overactive.

There are two main types of hyperhidrosis:

  • Primary focal hyperhidrosis: This chronic condition, often inherited genetically, primarily affects areas like the armpits, hands, feet, and face. It typically begins before age 25.
  • Secondary generalized hyperhidrosis: Excessive sweating due to an underlying medical condition or medication side effects, such as diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, or certain drugs like naproxen (Aleve®). It may cause sweating during sleep.
